Preseason Advice for Monday-Friday Contests

Hello everyone - this entry is going to be short and sweet here.

DraftKings has been offering several preseason NFL slates this month, and if you have been reading this blog so far, I think you should be doing quite well in building your bankroll for the coming season.  So if you are coming here for a "who should I play tonight" type post, I do not blame you at all - but this entry is going to be a bit different.

This is the transition phase of the NFL preseason, since Monday is the end of Week 2 of the preseason schedule and Friday marks the beginning of Week 3.  Why is that significant?  Well, most NFL teams view Week 3 as the "dry run" for the regular season, and they will play starters typically through the first series after halftime.  That means the top starters are playing 35 or so minutes on Friday (and the rest of Week 3) but tonight will see the starters leaving the game no later than the middle of the second quarter.

So what does all that mean?  Should we not play tonight?

Not to lawyer up too much for you here, but I will say "it depends".  The answer is "yes, play" but also "no, don't play anyone from tonight".  That's right - play the games for Monday-Friday contests as you have four teams to choose from, but you are best served to fade the players from tonight's contest.  Considering it is Tampa Bay and Cincinnati, there are not too many players to target anyway, so fading is likely the best strategy by far.

So, sign up for the games, and change your rosters on Friday to the players from those three contests.  That's my advice, and I hope it serves you well.

Good luck.

  1. Any thoughts on using a Defense from tonight vs Friday night? I'm thinking Bucs at home in a preseason game could be viable since it's the lowest Vegas total and it's even worse for starters than preseason, its' a short week til Week 3 preseason. I know this holds true for the defense as well, but seems like it could be worth the gamble.
